I started to make an impact on the lives of all students, to be an ally to students of color who often don’t see themselves reflected in the staff of their schools, and try to broaden the horizons of those students who might not have access to the same resources as those from higher income families. Computer science related work is the new booming industry, and a career in computer science can be life changing.

I am from Hammond, Indiana and I discovered my passion for CS when I learned that it could serve as a way to let my creativity flow and help make people’s lives easier. During the summer of 2020 I interned for Amazon as an Amazon Future Engineer and one thing I enjoyed the most about the AFE program was the sense of community it provided. Being an intern at a major tech company like Amazon after your freshman year of college can seem daunting but when you have a community of those similar to you, it helps make your experience 10X better.

My hope is to inspire students and let them know that -if I can win an award like this, they can do much more. My goal as a teacher is to give students that boost, a launchpad, and an extra hand. Being a part of this program and now winning this award, I’m looking forward to next year as we reach a new cohort of students ready to explore, build, and take advantage of this program to better themselves and their community.

What is the Amazon Future Engineer internship like?

Winners of the Amazon Future Engineer scholarship also receive an offer to complete a summer industry internship after completing their freshman year of college. AFE interns work embedded on a software or hardware engineering team and pair up with a co-intern, manager, and mentors to build projects that have a real impact on Amazon customers. Interns get to work on some of Amazon’s groundbreaking technologies and core platforms, like Alexa voice technology, Amazon Web Services, and the Amazon retail platform. At the end of the summer, most interns ship production-level code to Amazon!

Besides their project work, Amazon Future Engineer interns get exposure to the Amazon business through fireside chats with senior leaders, deep dives from technology teams, and an annual Alexa skills-building hackathon. Interns build bonds with their fellow intern cohort by collaborating on their project work and through social events - so if you join us as an AFE intern, you’ll have lots of fellow interns from a similar background to go through this experience with you!
