About Coding for Climate Action
This spring, Amazon Future Engineer, the Micro:bit Educational Foundation, and the National Science Teacher Association are partnering to launch Coding for Climate Action - an elementary and middle school learning program that teaches students how to use computer science to protect the planet! Students learn the basics of computer science and apply their new skills to code a micro:bit invention to combat a climate change challenge in their community. Five partner school districts, 40 teachers, and 2,000 students are piloting the program this spring.

Pilot Unit: Mitigating the Effects of Natural Hazards

Anchoring Phenomenon: Worldwide, between 1970-1979, there were 711 climate-related natural hazards. Between 2010-2022, there were 3,165 climate-related natural hazards.

Design Problem: How can we design early warning systems to increase community resilience and mitigate the effects of natural hazards caused by climate change?

Elementary Materials

Aligned to Grades 3-5 NGSS and CSTA Standards. 7 Lessons for 12 45-minute class periods.

Middle School Materials

Aligned to Grades 6-8 NGSS and CSTA Standards. 9 Lessons for 13 45-minute class periods.
